The Schilthorn Turns 50—Grab awesome Swiss views at 1950’s prices!

schilthorn

The Shilthorn cableway in Switzerland turns 50 in 2017. To celebrate, the cableway will charge the same prices that they charged 50 years ago. Score! They’ll also roll out other special offers and attractions throughout the year.

The Schilthorn (2,970 meters) is an icon in Switzerland’s famed Berner Oberland, and it makes a great add-on to your any hiking tour through the region.

James Bond fans love the Schilthorn for its prominent role in the 1969 Bond flick On Her Majesty’s Secret Service starring George Lanzenby. In the film, Bond’s villain Ernst Blofeld (played by Telly Savalas) plans to sterilize the world’s food supply using an army of brainwashed women that he calls the “Angels of Death.” Bond infiltrates Blofeld’s mountain top laboratory which is actually the real-life panoramic revolving restaurant known as the Piz Gloria. The restaurant and viewing platform sit like a nest on top of the Schilthron and offer a commanding view of the surrounding landscape. You can have a nice champagne brunch in the restaurant, and you can also get your Bond fix at Bond World 007, an interactive exhibition that opened at the summit in the summer of 2013.

Even if you don’t care about Bond, you’ll love the scenery at the top of the Schilthorn. Check out the above photo. Ryder-Walker trip leader Babsi Glanznig grabbed a shot of her guests on top of the Schilthorn during one of our many hiking tours through the area. In the distance, you can see the famous Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks. The Schilthorn makes a nice addition to the following tours:
