Hiking in Switzerland AND Italy.
Village-based to minimize packing and unpacking.
Seven nights in hotels handpicked for their charm and authenticity.
The Engadine is one of Switzerland’s most enchanting and intriguing regions. Cute storybook villages, delicious food, welcoming inns, and hiking trails for every skill level entice the avid hiker. For those who enjoy a little magic, the medieval castles, ancient Roman settlements, and an official language called Romansh lend an air of mystery and wonder.
We know that you’ll love this trip for the same reasons that we love it. First, this is the ONLY Engadine trip we offer that visits BOTH Switzerland and Italy during the course of the hike. Second, this is the only Engadine hike on our schedule that stays three full nights at the historic Hotel Meisser, a jewel in the Swiss Alps that everybody should visit at least once in their lives.
The Hotel Meisser welcomed their first distinguished guests back in 1893. Now in their fifth generation, the Meisser family’s continued dedication to quality service and hospitality is beyond reproach. We love this hotel for its warmth, luxury, tradition, simplicity, tranquility, and a feeling of home away from home. We know that you’ll love it too, when you sip a glass of wine on their sunny garden terrace or relax beneath your crisp down comforter after a hot shower and a satisfying day on the hiking trail.
On day four, you’ll hike across the Italian border to the tucked-away mountain village of Livigno. You’ll stop at a mountain hut for lunch and you’ll hike beneath the Piz Chaschauna (3,071m/10,075 ft). “Piz” is the word for a mountaintop, or peak, in these parts. The Piz Chaschauna straddles the border between the Swiss National Park in the Engadine and the Stelvio National Park in Italy. The following day, you’ll hike back across the border into Switzerland with grand views of the glacier-capped peaks of the Bernina Mountains. The Bernina range is one of the highest mountain ranges in the Swiss Alps.
Finish the tour in a cozy three star historic Engadine house in Pontresina, with hikes into the Val Roseg, and a climb to the Segantini Hut (2,731m/8,960 ft) for lunch. The Segantini Hut was the final retreat of Giovanni Segantini, one of the most famous painters in Europe during the late nineteenth century. Seganinti was known for his pastoral landscape paintings of the Alps, and he climbed up to the small hut on the Shafberg (the Segantini Hut) to capture the breathtaking, uninterrupted views of the Bernina Massif and the Engadine lakes down below.
You’ll feel the same inspiration that Segantini felt as you sample the delicious treats from the hut kitchen and gaze across the top of the Swiss Alps from your well-earned perch on the airy mountain terrace.

Begin with a bus ride to Ftan. Catch the newly built Prui Chair lift and enjoy a walk deep into the Val Tasna. After a picnic you’ll continue to Ardez, an ancient hill town turned artist colony, and onto Guarda. Return to your charming hotel in Guarda.
Ascend the beautiful Val Minger. Hike beneath the famous Piz Lischana, Piz Minger and Piz Pisco, before entering the Val Plavna. Enjoy expansive views of the towering Piz Plavna, Dadaint and Piz Zuort. Before returning to the hotel, it may be worth it to stop at Chaste Tarasp, a medieval castle and one of the historical landmarks of Switzerland. Return to your hotel in Guarda.
After a short transfer to Varusch, ascend through the Val Chaschauna and hike beneath the stunning Piz Chaschauna (10,075 ft.). At the Chaschauna pass, cross the border into Italy and enjoy a high-alpine lunch at Rifugio di Cassana shortly thereafter. Then descend to Pian dei Morti and follow the river Torrente Federia into Livigno and settle into your hotel for the night.
NOTE: You will not have your luggage tonight.
Begin the day with a short shuttle ride to the trail head at Baitel del Gras degli Agnelli. From there, ascend towards the border to Switzerland and cross over at La Stretta, and continue onto Alp la Stretta. Enjoy expansive views of the Bernina group before you arrive in Pontresina and settle into your hotel in the town’s center.
From Pontresina, walk into the Val Roseg and stop for acoffee at Roseg before ascending to Fuorcla Surlej. After a wonderful lunch, continue onto the cable car station Murtel and descend towards Silvaplana. Enjoy expansive views of the Upper Engadine, all the way to the Maloja Pass. Once in the valley, make your way back to Pontresina by bus.
The options are endless in the area of the Engadine Valley. We’ll provide a few options for the final day of the trek. A great option is to climb to the Segantini hut and enjoy the finest views of the Engadine. Return to Pontresina and celebrate your last night in the Swiss Alps with a glass of wine.
