San Francisco

Ryder-Walker’s Sausalito to Napa Valley and San Francisco to Point Reyes itineraries pair naturally with time in San Francisco yet stand just as confidently on their own. These journeys are ideal for hikers drawn to rugged coastlines, towering redwoods, and expansive open landscapes.

San Francisco is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the United States, shaped by a long and influential cultural history. Over the decades, it has been home to groundbreaking art movements, from abstract expressionism and Beat-era poetry to the bold, street-influenced Mission School that emerged in the 1980s and 1990s. Today, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art offers a compelling window into this creative legacy.

For much of the 20th century, San Francisco stood at the center of American counterculture. It was the birthplace of the 1967 Summer of Love, a focal point of the hippie movement, and a gathering place for anti–Vietnam War protests. These roots shaped a vibrant musical landscape—psychedelic rock, art rock, Bay Area hip hop, and more—that continues to influence music and culture far beyond the region. The city’s identity remains closely tied to creativity, progressive ideas, and its long-standing role in youth and queer culture.

Today, San Francisco has evolved into a global center of technology and innovation, attracting ambitious thinkers from around the world while retaining the character, diversity, and creative energy that have always defined it.

Sausalito

Sausalito sits just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco yet feels worlds away. This waterfront enclave is known for its relaxed café culture, lively downtown, and bay-facing homes that catch the afternoon light. With its longstanding houseboat community and inviting mix of restaurants, wine bars, and seaside patios, Sausalito has an easy going, coastal character that belies its close proximity to the city.

Mill Valley

Mill Valley itself is a vibrant and cosmopolitan town, set at the edge of the forested hills of Marin County in Northern California. It serves as a natural gateway to Muir Woods National Monument, one of the region’s most mysterious and treasured redwood forests in the country. This beautifully preserved expanse of forest is home to the Cathedral Grove and some of the oldest and tallest trees in the country. This national monument is truly primeval and is one of the most impressive natural treasures of Northern California. Walking her feels immersive and timeless, offering access to a region rich with natural treasures.

Napa Valley Wine

San Francisco and the Bay Area have also become synonymous with high-quality wine, thanks to the world-class vineyards of Napa Valley. Considered by many to be among the best wine-producing regions in the world, Napa Valley’s wineries have, over the past few decades, begun to rival even European winemaking giants such as Italy and France. The crown jewel of Napa Valley grape varieties is Cabernet Sauvignon, which produces full-bodied wines that often feature fruit-forward notes such as currant or black cherry.

The ace up the sleeve of Napa Valley’s vintners, however, is the region’s remarkable range of microclimates. Within Napa Valley itself, grapes can thrive in sunny, arid conditions, cooler shaded environments, or in the heavy fog that settles along the valley floor. The result is a remarkable diversity of grapes, wines, and flavors that all call Napa Valley home.
