North, south, and west of Barcelona spreads a land of such diversity that, although its farthest corner is no more than 125 miles from the city, you could spend weeks exploring it and still feel that you have barely begun. First mentioned in an article for a Catalan newspaper by Ferran Agulló, Costa Brava translates into “Wild Coast” and refers to the rugged coastline of the Mediterranean, which runs from the Tordera River north of Barcelona to Banyuls-sur-Mer on the border to France.

The Costa Brava still boasts the wild beauty that first drew visitors, yet it remains largely untouched by mass tourism. Alongside the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca, the Costa Brava stands as one of Spain’s top holiday destinations, boasting stunning coastlines dotted with picturesque headlands, hidden inlets, and dazzling blue waters. Its classic Mediterranean climate brings hot, dry summers, with average temperatures ranging from 45°F to 83°F. The warmest months are typically July and August.

With lush green pines on one side and the mesmerizing blue sea on the other, coastal walks on the Costa Brava are truly spectacular. Explore the quieter side of the Spanish Mediterranean as you hike past secluded coves with charming beaches, traverse rugged cliffs, and wander through sleepy fishing villages.

Begin your trek in Platja de Fornells, a picturesque coastal spot in Begur, known for its charming coves, crystal-clear waters, and relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and enjoying fresh seafood at local restaurants while taking in stunning sea views.

Heading north, follow the rugged coastline through quaint beach towns with pristine sandy shores. Along the way, take a refreshing dip in the Mediterranean and bask in the sun in these hidden seaside havens.

Continue your journey to the intimate beaches of Sa Tuna and Sa Riera before reaching Begur, where you’ll be greeted by breathtaking views of the town’s 10th-century “castell” perched above. Spend the evening exploring the historic old town, exploring its winding streets, lively squares, and captivating charm.

Next, head to the storybook medieval town of Pals, in the heart of the Bay of Emporada. Along the way visit Palau-Sator, another medieval town, before a transfer to the famous fishing port of Roses. Spend the afternoon exploring the historic Citadel, browsing local shops, relaxing on the beach, and indulging in delicious regional cuisine.

The trek concludes near the French border in Cadaqués, a place that inspired legends like Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, and Pablo Picasso.

Ryder-Walker’s mini-trek along the Costa Brava offers breathtaking coastal hikes, sweeping views of the Mediterranean, and, on clear days, glimpses of the Pyrénées. Along the way, explore historic sites, immerse yourself in Catalan culture, and savor its renowned cuisine.
