The following lists are guidelines, which should give you an idea of what to bring on your next Ryder Walker Alpine Adventure. We do recommend to “break-in” all essential equipment, especially boots and backpacks!
Equipment List
The Daily essentials
- Backpack with hydration system (Be sure this is of adequate size to fit the listed items as well as a picnic lunch or
other items.) - Rain cover for backpack (or waterproof drysacks for pack interior)
- Hiking Boots: well broken in, made of breathable and waterproof material
- Rain Jacket: Light, preferably made of Gore-Tex but definitely waterproof and breathable material
- Rain Pants: waterproof, breathable, preferably with zippers on the side for maximum ventilation
- Insulating Layer: synthetic fleece, wool or thin-down
- Base Layer, lightweight top and bottom
- Hiking Pants: synthetic, lightweight, zipoff legs, capris
- Hiking Shorts: lightweight, synthetic
- Long-sleeve Shirt: quick drying, synthetic, wool
- T-Shirts for hiking: quick drying, synthetic is the best choice
- Hiking socks
- Underwear
- Winter Hat (synthetic or wool for mountain hiking-even in summer)
- Sun Hat (ball cap or wide brim)
- Gloves: please take gloves made of materials that shield wind and are water-resistant
- Collapsible Trekking Poles
- Hydration System: we advise to bring either 2 quart BPA-free bottles or the equivalent size hydration pack
- Sunscreen / Sunblock (SPF 50)
- Small Umbrella: every guide packs one

- Altimeter, GPS, and Compass for independent travelers

Hut night essentials
- Headlamp
- Earplugs
- Small, lightweight travel towel
- Slippers or flip/flops although many huts supply slippers
- Travel Sheet: preferable made out of silk, with a built-in pillowcase
- Essential toiletries: small soap bar, toothbrush, moisturizer and sunscreen
First Aid Kit essentials
- Band Aids and sterile pads for minor cuts and sores
- Antihistamines
- Blister Kit: “Compeed” Blister Plasters in size medium and Moleskin
- ACE Bandage
- Sterile Wipes and to clean minor wounds
- Small size bottle of Iodine or Hydrogen Peroxide to sterilize minor cuts and wounds
- Antibiotic ointment
- Pain relievers, aspirin and Ibuprofen tablets
- Charcoal Tablets for upset stomachs
- Medication against travel sickness
- Pocketknife or Scissors
- Tweezers/safety pins/nail clippers
