Ryder-Walker’s Roots in Morocco

Our journey to Morocco began nearly 15 years ago when Peter Walker and Lead guide Ken Fuhrer, along with a pair of Swedish guides, embarked on a ski and ice-climbing expedition in the High Atlas Mountains. Despite broken skis and unexpected challenges, they forged lasting friendships in Imlil and returned with tales of adventure.

Since 2019, our expert guide Niko has been leading Ryder-Walker treks across this captivating land, uncovering its hidden gems and weaving unforgettable experiences for our guests. Below Niko shares his insights and explains why our Morocco adventure should be on your bucket list.

Diverse and Welcoming

My initial travels in Morocco filled me with an enduring sense of excitement. Traveling through the country from the northern shores of the Mediterranean to the Atlantic coast in the west, I encountered significant cultural diversity paired with warm hospitality. The Medina’s outer walls may seem plain, but stepping into a local riad reveals luxury and vibrant private life. Locals are proud of their heritage and eager to share their family stories. On one occasion, I had difficulty finding my way out of the souks in Essaouira and was guided by a local man back to a main street through his private prayer chambers.

Unique Landscapes and Culture

Moroccan culture is unique. Exploring the streets of Marrakesh, with its unique architecture, diverse street performances, food vendors, and the lively Djemaa El Fna square, is an exceptional experience. Once tired of the bustling streets, I often visit the Majorelle Garden, one of Morocco’s most beautiful botanical gardens. Carefully designed by French artist Jacques Majorelle over 40 years and later restored by designer Yves Saint Laurent, these gardens are both inspirational and tranquil. For a romantic dinner in town, I recommend one of the rooftop terraces, such as the highly rated Riad El Fenn.

Great Hiking Experience

Beyond its cinematic fame in Hollywood movies, the High Atlas Mountains rise majestically above the desert, creating a distinctive landscape. Located only one and a half hours from Marrakesh, Imlil serves as an entry point to the world of hiking and the Berbers. These indigenous people of the Maghreb predate the arrival of Arabs and provide a unique cultural experience in Imlil that is truly captivating.

Collaborating with the local team has been highly rewarding. Each team consists of muleteers, a chef, and a local guide who ensure our safe passage to remote huts and prepare fresh meals daily. The trails are well-maintained and somewhat strenuous, but they offer a rewarding hiking experience.

On the second day of hiking, upon reaching a high pass above Imlil, our group was welcomed with a picnic lunch set in the shade of a tree. The stunning views, combined with fresh fruits and various tajines accompanied by Berber tea, created a lasting gastronomical memory.

Another notable moment is reaching a grand waterfall shortly after the Azib Tamsoult hut, followed by traversing a series of switchbacks that offer stunning 360-degree views of the mountain peaks, comparable to the Himalayas. Many Ryder-Walker clients describe watching the sunrise at the summit of Mt. Toubkal, which stands at 13,671 feet, as an unforgettable experience. After hiking, the excitement continues with bargaining for a jillaba or a Moroccan rug.

At Ryder-Walker, we’ve carefully curated this trek to blend adventure, cultural immersion, and seamless logistics. Our trusted partners at Toubkal Guides ensure each step of the journey is expertly managed, from comfortable riad stays to the support of experienced local guides. This is more than a hike—it’s an exploration of a civilization rich in tradition, beauty, and resilience.
