  • Taste world-class Rieslings along the historic Alsace Wine Route.

Alsace is a region of fairy-tale villages, rolling vineyards, castle-topped hills, and a culture shaped by both French elegance and German tradition. Nestled between the Vosges Mountains and the Rhine River, this narrow wine region is renowned for its Grand Cru vineyards, pastel-colored towns, and medieval architecture that seems unchanged by time.

Walking in Alsace reveals a landscape best explored at a leisurely pace. Trails weave through vine rows that glow gold in late afternoon sun, climb into quiet forests, and descend into lively village squares filled with markets, cafés, and wine cellars. Charming towns such as Barr, Andlau, Ribeauvillé, Riquewihr, and Kaysersberg anchor the journey, each offering its own history and personality.

Your journey through Alsace begins in Obernai, a storybook town of cobbled lanes, half-timbered houses, and vineyard-fringed hillsides. From here, the hiking unfolds in a gentle rhythm that captures the best of the region—forest paths climbing to ancient abbeys, panoramic ridgelines with views across the Rhine Valley, and quiet vineyard tracks connecting some of France’s most charming wine villages. Each day offers approachable mileage and beautifully varied terrain, with opportunities to stop in historic market squares, visit family-run wineries, and enjoy lunch in towns that feel unchanged for centuries.

The early days explore the wooded slopes of Mont Sainte-Odile and the rolling vineyards leading you from Barr to Itterswiller, revealing the cultural layers and easy charm of Bas-Rhin. As you continue south, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic. Trails wind through iconic Grand Cru vineyards—Zellberg, Münchberg, Rosacker, Schlossberg, Kaefferkopf, Sommerberg, and Brand—each showcasing the diverse soils that shape Alsace’s legendary Rieslings and Gewürztraminers. Walks between Ribeauvillé, Riquewihr, Kaysersberg, and Turckheim connect some of the most beautifully preserved villages in France, with castle climbs, hillside chapels, and sweeping vineyard views marking each day. The journey concludes with a rewarding descent into medieval Turckheim, followed by a short transfer to Colmar and your final night in 5-star comfort.

The terrain is gentle yet varied, ideal for travelers who want scenic walking without strenuous climbing. Protected by the Vosges, Alsace is one of France’s driest regions, with pleasant temperatures in spring and fall—perfect hiking weather.

Alsatian cuisine is a warm blend of French refinement and German heartiness. Expect dishes like tarte flambée, choucroute garnie, river fish, Munster cheese, spätzle, and exquisite pastries. These pair beautifully with the region’s crisp Rieslings, aromatic Gewürztraminers, and rare Grand Cru bottlings—wines that reflect the region’s centuries-old devotion to craftsmanship. With its rich cultural layers, welcoming hospitality, and landscapes as beautiful as they are approachable, Alsace is one of Europe’s most rewarding walking destinations.
