Walk across the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, look out over the Pacific Ocean, and wander into the ancient redwoods of Muir Woods National Monument on a journey that takes you from the city into the open landscapes of Marin County and Point Reyes National Seashore. Ryder-Walker’s San Francisco to Point Reyes National Seashore self-guided trek is an exceptional showcase of the diverse environments found just north of San Francisco.
The tour begins on San Francisco’s iconic waterfront, where you’ll check in at the Argonaut Hotel, located on Fisherman’s Wharf. With the bay just outside your door, you’ll have time to stroll the waterfront, take in views toward the Golden Gate Bridge, and settle into the city’s coastal energy before heading north the following day. Crossing the bridge, we leave the city behind and arrive in Sausalito—a relaxed harbor town known for its boutique hotels, farm-to-table dining, and thriving arts community.
The next stage of the journey sets its sights on Muir Beach, where seaside bluffs overlook the Pacific Ocean. As you head inland, the redwood forests near Mill Valley await, with wooded trails leading deep into the cool, mist-fed environment of Muir Woods National Monument. Here, towering coast redwoods rise overhead, some of them centuries old, creating a quiet and atmospheric walking experience.
From the forest, the route turns back toward the coast, where wooded ridges give way to expansive ocean views.
While hiking, you travel wooded trails, rocky shoreline, and well-maintained paths, spending the night in a mix of upscale hotels and cozy inns.
This tour highlights both Northern California’s vibrant culture and its striking natural landscapes. Whether exploring art galleries along Sausalito’s waterfront, enjoying thoughtfully prepared meals sourced from local farms in the village of Olema, or taking in the crashing waves along the Point Reyes coastline, this journey offers a rich and well-rounded experience of Northern California’s coastal region.
