Switzerland’s Blüemlisalpgletscher Glacier

This is the Blüemlisalpgletscher Glacier in the Berner Oberland region of central Switzerland. You can reach this point by hiking eastward from the town of Kandersteg to the Hohtürli Pass (2,778 meters). We do this hike on day 5 of our Eiger Trail trip. It’s a climb of more than 5,000 feet! You can also hike westward from the tiny village of Griesalp. We do the Griesalp hike on day 6 of our Berner Oberland Trek. Either way, you’re definitely going to climb in order to experience the glacier. The Griesalp trail ascends nearly 4,500 feet.
The views are worth it once you reach the top, and there’s a nice Swiss hut called the Blüemlisalphütte that serves beer, wine and hot Swiss specialties at the top of the pass. We love this glacier because of the way it seems to ooze and flow from the rocks, and we dig its icy tendrils sparkling in the summer sun.
Ryder-Walker trip leader Ken Fuhrer shot this photo during one of our guided trips through the Berner Oberland last summer.
